Also, hot. And sweaty. I can’t run the car at the moment because I am pretty sure it should be off at least to begin. I can’t put the windows down because BUGS. But I’m trying to get a VIDA setup working in my Volvo and I just have to sit in it for a while as my old laptop gets going.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve downloaded a VM setup from a helpful individual on the Swedespeed forum, along with what may or may not be a working local copy of VIDA. Supposedly the easiest route was to just run a VM using a VM player ... whatever that is exactly other than a shortcut to running a virtual machine without much initial setup.

Meanwhile I have my chromebook so I can google why it’s not working, and/or read the instructions or ask questions on Swedespeed... and share my experience with Oppo of course.

Oh the best part is that my old laptop battery doesn’t work AT ALL, so I was going to have to run an extension cord to the car... but wait. I have an inverter... no. Because when I start the car it will momentarily drop power so the laptop will crash. BEHOLD: The old battery from this car will be enough to run an inverter! So it’s on the floor of the passenger’s seat and I’m being serenaded by the sounds of an old inverter fan humming away, no doubt also producing even more heat.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I KNOW my car needs to be cleaned. In fact, it was worse a few weeks ago.

My first attempt at connecting the car to laptop via DiCE module failed, so I’m trying a different method. Wish me luck?

UPDATE - 10:00PM - I got it working, yay! And I did not find anything wrong with my charging system, which is partly the reason for doing this in the first place.... hmm.

Xc70?

Whats going on with it?

Theres a guy on the forum who sells preloaded laptops with vida. I’m really tempted to just pick one up and make my life easier

What color is the icon in the taskbar? It should start out yellow upon initial windows boot then eventually turn green.

All that heat is probably dangerous to the intake manifold

It’s an XC70 yeah, 2012. It intermittently says (my translation): “lost connection with radiator anti-tamper sensor” (DTC U0286 read by OBDII reader) and displays “Charging system failure” on the dash screen.

So, the radiator anti-tamper thing I could ignore, but it does trip the CEL which is annoying. The Charging System Failure is rather threatening, but I put a cheap volt gauge in the power outlet by the cupholders and it never reads below 13.5 once the car is running normally. However, sometimes the thing will sit at like 13.8 for a long time, while other times it reads 14.4-14.8 for the entire drive cycle.

Anyway, I did get the VIDA working and it was ... mind blowing. It’s incredible what you can see, and I did an alternator charging system test of some sort, which it passed.

I wouldn’t really hesitate to get a pre-loaded laptop - you still need a DiCE unit though - but I happened to have a 2012 Dell with a Core i5 and 16 gb RAM so I thought I’d try the VM setup detailed here: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?481385-VIDA-Dice-2014D-VM-Image-Download-Link

It worked, but does take a while to load even on that laptop which, while not fast, exactly, is well above the “minimum requirements.”

I am very happy to be back in my a/c house right now, it’s quite steamy out there. I did have to run the car for a while to do some testing, and some of that time I could use the a/c - other times I had to have ALL electrical stuff off, as much as possible, for the charging system test.

Which icon? I did eventually get it working, maybe just a restart and then I also had the car in “Acc II” mode before opening VIDA. Whatever, it worked.

Oh, good! It might be hidden by default but it’s a VIDA icon in the task bar that kinda works like a stop light.

That makes sense. I did see an unknown icon in the taskbar. The VM is a bit laggy, but OK when navigating around within VIDA. You just have to be a bit patient and look for signs of responsiveness so you don’t accidentally click on 3 things and get it all confused. If you’re patient, it works great.

I tried it on a VM for a while but couldn’t deal with the lag. I’m dual booting on an old Mac that’s worthless for any other purpose.

I thought about getting a 64gb USB and trying it that way, it might be faster? The laptop does have USB 3 at least.

I’m also considering trying it on a newish chromebook running linux. I mean, let’s just dive in head first, right?

The usb drive might be fast enough but you have to jump through some hoops to get windows to boot from an external drive. Are you currently running it on a SSD or spinning rust?

lol, spinning rust @500gb. I’m not sure I want to spend $100 on an SSD but maybe, if I find myself using it more. I did spend $22 on a battery so I don’t have to use an extension cord or inverter every time I want to run it in the car.

The thing was updated to Win10 when that first came out as a free updated to Win7 users, and it’s been pestering me to ‘activate windows’ ever since, but it never works. Seeing how it’s working right now I will image the drive and see how much I use it before going SSD.
